07/01/2012 Sportshall Open
The sportshall is now open for archery following the refurbishment.
Everyone considers it a great improvement. The sportshall is warmer, seems brighter, has been given a lick of paint and has nice new ladies and gents toilets.
The entrance is now infront of the shooting line, so entry and exit are limited to the time inbetween ends of shooting.
We have been asked by management to keep the place clean and tidy. No black soled shoes please and take your rubbish home with you.

30/11/2011 Sportshall Update II

21/11/2011 Grimsby Archers success at Trackside
Today was the Worcester round of Trackside’s Indoor league. Kevin Hughes took first place with 287 & 282 = 569 for the double round.
This gave Kevin a new PB for the single & the double rounds. New club record for the double, & new county records for both the single & double. To be confirmed

Gary Griffin had 2 bad releases in the first end of the morning & put 2 arrows in the same target face which lost him 7 points. Of his remaining 55 arrows one was a 4 & the other 54 were all x or 5, ending on 292 points & taking 1st place in the gents compound.

Florence Firth won 1st in the ladies recurve.

Another good day all round for Grimsby Archers.

21/11/2011 Sunday practise moved to St Andrews College
Due to very poor attendance at Carr Lane on Sundays, Sunday practise will move to St Andrews college with immediate effect.

15/10/2011 Sports hall update
Work has now started on refurbishment of the school sports hall, so Saturday practise will be outdoors at St Andrews College and Sunday practise at Carr Lane until further notice. St Andrews apologise for the inconvenience.

24/09/2011 Club Subs are overdue
Anyone who has not paid their club subs is now a lapsed member and will not be allowed to shoot until subs and gnas (where appropriate) is paid.
Everyone was sent a reminder by email or letter recently.
So that we could send the gnas "returns" in, anyone who has not paid has now been struck off the gnas list. So, if you pay your subs late, we have to raise a whole new set of paperwork for you, causing additional postage and frustration for our treasurer, so you may be asked to pay an additional admin fee of £3.
If you are suffering financial hardship, please contact the treasurer.
You can pay by cash or cheque at any of our practise meetings, or by paypal e-invoice on request.

18/09/2011 Grimsby Archers triumph at Friskney
A near perfect archery day at the Dennis Ingham memorial shoot at Friskney today, resulted in a perfect result for Grimsby Archers.

Perfect!

17/09/2011 Sunday 25th September shooting at St Andrews (not Carr Lane)
Sunday 25th September shooting will be at St Andrews not Carr Lane as Kevin and Ian are unavailable.
Some members expressed a wish to get practise and sight marks at indoor distances before we lose use of the sports hall for the refurbishment work.

17/09/2011 Important - St Andrews College Sports Hall
We have received notice from St Andrews College that they have got funding to refurbish the sports hall.
This is, in the long term, good news for us because, as well as having a nicer sports hall to shoot in, it also secures the future of the sports hall for some time as they wouldnt be spending money on it if they were going to demolish it.

Unfortunately the work is likely to take 6 weeks, starting in the beginning of October. This means we wont be able to use the sportshall for a few weeks during October and November.
We are determined that archery should continue as normal. St Andrews are looking into the possibility of us using the old Lower School sports hall.
Failing that, we'll just have to put up with the weather and shoot outdoors.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

18/06/2011 County Champions
Grimsby Archers Rosemarie Cawkwell, Kevin Hughes and Graham Crampin (not pictured) were crowned County Champions in Ladies Longbow, Gents Recurve and Gents Compound bow categories respectively.

Longbow archer Rosemarie described the conditions at last weekend's Lincolnshire County Championships as "very wet".
She said "I didnt score as well as I'd hoped I would, finishing with 130 points mostly because of the rain"

Meanwhile, Kevin Hughes said "I think the rain gave me an advantage. Most archers dont like shooting in the rain, but it doesnt bother me at all"

Both Rosemarie and Kevin have added the County Championship titles to this year's haul of county titles, both already holding the county indoor championship and county "windsor" titles in their respective categories.

Kevin attributed his recent improvement to some good quality help from his coach, Andrew Harrison and lots of hard practise.

Rosemarie, who was reigning county champion from last year said she was looking forwards to the 4th and final county title, the County FITA shoot, held at Louth next month. She said "If I can win the County FITA as well, that'll be the whole series in one season"

16/06/2011 Monthly coaching initiative
The club coaches will be running a monthly coaching session on the second Saturday of each month.
The sessions are voluntary for archers who want help and advice on improving their shooting.
The first part of each session we'll cover a set subject as a group, while the second part will be one to one coaching or question and answer. Over the coming months, we'll try to address anything that you are interested in. Basics, equipment, tuning, technique, competitions, mental game.
So, if this sounds like you, turn up.
First session will be July 9th.

20/03/2011 Kevin's Dream Win
Around the middle of January, Kevin Hughes told friends about a dream he had had.
He explained: "In it, it was a score tie for 1st place between me and Ian Prescott, it came down to the most 10’s, but before the final result was given I woke up.

When we had finished shooting for the day and before the results had been I told Graham and Colin Elves about the dream ( they seamed very sceptical about it ) as I am sure anyone would be. Even I wasn't completely sure the dream would come true."

For Kevin, this years county indoor champs is a dream come true.
The final results were:
3rd – Roger Sale (Independant), Score 1102

2nd – Ian Prescott (Lincoln Archers), 120 hits, Score 1134 with 65 10’s

1st – Kevin Hughes (Grimsby Archers), 120 hits, Score 1134 with 66 10's

Kevin said: "Spooky or what!!. Those scores were too close for comfort. But a win is a win. That makes me a VERY happy chappy. Won 2 years in a row.
I just need to dream about the winning lottery numbers now so I can buy enough land for a club indoor and outdoor range."

Congratulations Kevin

18/09/2010 Andrew Harrison qualifies as County Coach
At the age of 49, Andrew Harrison has qualified as a GNAS County Coach, one of only four in the county of Lincolnshire.
His qualification took 18 months of study and practical work ending with a weekend of assessment. Andrew had to work with one archer as a case study towards his qualification. His chosen archer, Kevin Hughes won the county indoor championships and achieved his bowman classification, both directly attributable to the work he did with Andrew Harrison.
Andrew first tried archery on holiday at Center Parcs.
He said "I really enjoyed it, so when I came back I initially found a course at Grimsby Leisure Center and then went along to Grimsby Archers – my love of the sport just grew from there.
"I probably spend more time coaching other archers now than shooting, and it gives me as much enjoyment coaching and helping other people as it does participating myself.

The image shows (left to right) Andrew Harrison; Tom Musgrove, Assessor (Senior Coach); Barry Molsom, Course Tutor (Senior Coach); Sam Newton, Candidate County Coach; Mike Wood, Candidate County Coach; Andy Arnold, Observer (Candidate Senior Coach); Tom Williamson, Assessor (Senior Coach and outgoing President of Archery GB).

07/09/2010 Thoresby Trophy result
Nine Grimsby Archers made up 1/3rd of the Lincolnshire Team at the Thoresby Trophy East Midland Intercounties competition.
Recurve archers Freda Dunkley, Rory Campbell and Kevin Hughes; Compound archers Joanne Findley, Graham Crampin and Colin Elves; Longbow archers Rosemarie Cawkwell, Patricia Newman and Ian Smith all travelled to Welbeck Archers ground in Nottinghamshire to represent our county at this year's event.
Overall, the Lincolnshire recurve team came 2nd.
Despite shooting really well in the face of strong opposition, the compound team came 4th following a disastrous equipment failure that resulted in the eventual retirement of team manager Graham.
The county was able to field a longbow team for the first time in several years finishing the day in 4th position.
Full team managers report at http://www.lincsarchery.co.uk

10/08/2010 Spalding Silver Trophy Shoot 8th August 2010

Kevin took second place in the gents recurve, scoring the highest score from Lincolnshire

02/07/2010 School Summer Holidays
Please note the following changes to club arrangements during the school summer holidays
  • Matthew Humberstone have just notified us that there will be major works taking place on the school site during the summer holidays (23rd July 2010 to 6th September 2010)
  • This means access will be by Philip Avenue entrance only.
  • We will have NO access to the sportshall, which also means there will be no access to the toilets.
  • Access to the equipment container will be severely limited to key holders only so if you require stuff out of the container, please arrive before 10am to reduce the number of trips necessary.

  • I think we should move Sunday shooting to Carr Lane for the duration (final decision to be advised)
  • Mid week evening shooting at Carr Lane is unaffected.

Apologies for any inconvenience.
